Journey – exhibition of Oil on jute paintings

March 15 – March 21 2010 at Museum Art Gallery, Mumbai
Uma Chhatrapati is a doctor, dancer, painter and spiritual healer who believes in holistic energy and the karmic law with their diverse manifestations. Uma brings forth her 23rd solo show of oil paintings opening March 15th 2010 at the Museum Art Gallery in Mumbai, India.Life is a journey one embarks upon with rhythm and gusto, and this is exactly what Uma sets out to depict in this body of artwork. Uma sees life as an abstract exploration of rhythm and movement where one dances through the journey and celebrates every movement in rhythmic ecstasy.
This metaphysical journey to the omnipresent spiritual golden light is manifested in color by Uma’s works. Her figurative style expresses rhythm, dance et al while depicting the elements of this journey in communion with the golden light. The overall tone of her paintings modify the naturalism of local color and bring everything together in pictorial unity, against which even a red or silver streak shines out. Her compositions, figures, speedy strokes and apt movements are a visual treat that transcend the spectator to a different level while evoking an aura of positivity.
The cosmic dance of Lord Shiva (Shiv Tandava), evokes its presence in response to the sounds of the damaroo or the drums. The drums have since then been the most powerful sonic base on which spiritual enlightenment and the journey of life evolves - the rise of the kundalini, or the serpent energy. The drummers in ‘Mandali’ and ‘Medley’ envelope you into a trance and inspire you to let go of worldly desires to join their celebration. The unison of Shiva and Shakti is but the final destination of this journey, as depicted in ‘Shiv Shakti’.‘Souls in Trance’, ‘Enlightened’, ‘Transcendence’ and ‘Endless’ are figurative expressions of the journey to spiritual enlightenment. The devotion and energy multiplies when throngs of people rhythmically move higher and higher, towards the same destination – the golden light. ‘Mehfil’and ‘Theatrical’ are expressions of a dancer, while ‘Pilgrims’ shows nature’s partaking in this journey.
Journey is but a dance – twirling and whirling to the rhythm of the drums and invigorating the kundalini. It is a carefree, self rejoicing dance and Uma’s work explores this rhythm as her subjects await the nectar from the universal Gods.
